Heated protests prompt Environment Ministry to shut down Greystar hearing

Last friday, on the 4th of march, the public hearing was held in Bucaramanga with regards to Greystar's Angostura goldmining project, planned to start operating in the 'páramo' wetlands called Santurbán, in the department of Santander, Colombia.

A great number of people showed up, some of which seemed to have come by their own means, while others were brought with large buses from the municipalities of Vetas and California, where the mining project is to be implemented.

Massive protests in Colombia against Greystar Resources project

Friday the 25th of february saw protests in several Colombian cities against the 'Angostura' project of Canadian mining junior Greystar Resources, which is planned in the 'páramo Santurbán', wetlands located in the north of the country on the border of Santander and Norte de Santander departments.

The project's use of cyanide to extract gold could affect the fragile wetlands ecosystem and put in danger the drinking-water of 2 million people in the region.


Zijin Mining to pay $3m fine for hazardous waste water leaks

A court judgement showed on Monday that the gold miner will have to pay the money for the key role it played in the leaking of hazardous waste water last year.
