On July 7th, two unknown men shot Ms. Diodora Antonia Hernández Cinto in her home. She is a community leader of the movement against the Marlin Mine.

In May 2009, Goldcorp Inc. (via its wholly owned subsidiary in Guatemala “Montana Exploradora”) claims that they “legally” bought land in the community of Saqmuj, part of the villages of Ágel and San José Nueva Esperanza, in the municipality of San Miguel Ixtahuacán (department of San Marcos, Guatemala).  This is where Goldcorp operates its “Marlin” mine.

CATAPA vzw organiseert in het kader van de sprekerstour een grote slotactiviteit in Antwerpen op woensdag 6 mei, in samenwerking met USOS (Universitaire Stichting voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking), Toma La Palabra, Amnesty Jongeren en de Latijns-Amerikaanse Federatie.

De avond start om 19u in Aula R001 (Rodestraat 14) met een inleiding van Daan Janssens, coördinator van CATAPA vzw. Hij leidt de avond in met een blik op globalisering, mensenrechten en grondstoffenproblematiek in Latijns-Amerika. Daarna schetst Koen De Feyter (jurist UA, ex-voorzitter Amnesty International) welke (internationale) juridische mechanismen voorhanden zijn om deze problematiek aan te pakken.

Daarna is het de beurt aan onze Boliviaanse specialisten ter zake. We laten hen aan het woord en vragen hen ook wat ze vinden van de nationaliseringspolitiek van huidig president Evo Morales, en of dit gevolgen heeft voor de  neokoloniale uitbuiting, de conflicten en mensenrechtenschendingen in het land.
