During the escalation of the conflict between the Peruvian authorities and the indigenous people of the Amazonian rainforest, at least 30 people died and many were wounded. Two Belgian volunteers were the only international witnesses of the bloodbath (pictures at http://catapa.be/en/north-peru-killings).

Washington, D.C., June 8, 2009—The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) strongly condemns the acts of violence that took place on June 5 in Bagua, in northern Peru, which have caused a number of deaths.

[Press Release] 2 Belgian volunteers were witnesses of a bloody conflict in North Peru

Ghent, june 6, 2009. Two Belgian volunteers of CATAPA, a Belgian NGO that focuses on mining related problems in Latin America were present at the riots in the North of Peru. CATAPA distanciates itself from the violence and condemns the reaction of the Peruvian governement, but supports the legitimate claim of the indigenous people for their involvement in the development of the Amazon. Our volunteers Marijke Deleu and Thomas Quiryen are evacuated and brought to safety as we speak.
